So, as expected, I didn’t get much reading done this month. Between school (where I have to do a lot of non-recreational reading) and volunteering, my time just disappears. Honestly, even when I do have time, I don’t feel like reading because I’ve been reading all day and my eyes no longer want to comprehend words. I need to get back into the system and rediscover how much fun reading is. This is what I read this month:
- Century – Bruce Bernard (the last century represented by brutal photographs. Heavy on the war pictures, death, famine, genocide. All of it capture on camera.)
- The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian – Sherman Alexie (I will definitely be reviewing this at some point. Loved it.)
- The Nightmare Affair – Mindee Arnett (review nearer to release date)
- God Went to Beauty School – Cynthia Rylant (First verse novel of the year, didn’t impress me much.)
- Some of the Kinder Planets – Tim Wynne-Jones (lovely collection of stories)
- Racing the Dark – Alayna Dawn Johnson (review soon)
- Wicked City – Alayna Dawn Johnson (meh)
- The Night Fairy – Laura Amy Schlitz (cute)
- The Several Lives of Orphan Jack – Sarah Ellis (loved it)
- The Evolution of Mara Dyer – Michelle Hodkin (Annoyed the hell out of me. Review forthcoming, probably.)
- Winterling – Sarah Prineas (Liked it)
- Smile – Raina Telgemeier (Funny)
- The Wednesdays – Julie Bourbeau (review soonish)
- Words under the Words – Naomi Shihab Nye (some of the poems were wonderful, others did not appeal to me as much)
- A Tangle of Knots – Lisa Graff (A fun middle grade book)
- Amber House – Kelly Moore et al (review forthcoming)
- Pantomime – Laura Lam (look for review on blog)
- Splendors and Glooms – Laura Amy Schlitz (loved it, must acquire it)
- Free Fall – David Wiesner (I love his art!)
- Sector 7 – David Wiesner (so lovely!)
- Hurricane – David Wiesner (sigh!)
- The Mad Man’s Daughter – Megan Shepherd (liked it)
- F in Exams – Richard Benson (Hilarious)
- The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle – Haruki Murakami (made me think a lot. I kind of loved this.)
- The Goddess Chronicle – Natsuo Kirino (Wasn’t as awesome as I had hoped it would be.)
Tentative To-Read in February
- The Horologican – Mark Forsyth
- Constructing Adolescence in Fantastic Realism – Alison Waller
- The Girl with the Glass Feet – Ali Shaw
- Quicksilver – R. J. Anderson
- The Holders – Julianna Scott
- The Dead and the Buried – Kim Harrington
- The Cats of Tanglewood Forest – Charles de Lint
- Steampunk III – Anne Vandemeer
- Nobody – Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Looking forward to your review of the Nightmare Affair!
:D!
I kind of love how you call 25 books not reading much. I read 7 in that same time period (not counting the picture books I read to my students, of course). :) I have The Nightmare Affair from NetGalley and am really excited to read it. Did you enjoy it?
I did! A lot like Hex Hall so if you liked that one, you should like this one as well. Oo, I’m going to meet Oliver Jeffers in Feb. Have you read any of his books?
I have not! I’ve heard of him, though, and really love his style of illustrating. How To Catch A Star sounds super cute.
